Well, to say that these Elm Burl set are incredible would be a serious understatement!
This set of English Elm Burl is 6.9mm thick. Please see the measurements along the edges of the photography board to see other dimensions.
To find Elm burl of this quality is so rare to do, manly because it is prone to severe cracking during the drying process.
The slabs that yielded these sets were almost completely solid, with no splitting. The colour and quality of this burl is second to none. These came from the Scottish boarder, and were very very slowly air dried in a controlled environment to ensure they stayed as solid as possible. Finally, when the moisture content was down to roughly 15%, the slabs were put in a slow kiln just to delicately bring them down to finished level.
I’ve been so excited to finally start working on these slabs, and the tops yielded are simply mind-blowing. The best of the best.
As with all burl sets, no matter what the species, there may be the odd bark incursion here and there. These are usable but occasionally will require flooding out with a thin CA glue just to help stabilise. Larger Bark incursions and open knots may require filling or resin work.
