Master Grade Jarrah Burr Bookmatched Set
Incredible and very rare stock right here! This is the first time that I have been able to offer Jarrah Burr in sizes large enough for bookmatched instrument tops. To have a Jarrah burr large enough to cut tops from is one thing, but for them to be master grade figure is so so rare.
Jarrah comes all the way from sunny Australia, and is actually a type of Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus Marginata).
The burr that yielded these sets was completely solid, and weighed just shy of 100kg! Its such a hard wearing wood that it also takes a huge toll on machinery when cutting. For exacmple, if I am cutting bookmatched sets of Maple, I would have to change my bandsaw blade after 15-20 sets are cut. With this Jarrah I had to fit a new blade for every 5 cuts!
The colour and quality of this burr is second to none. In its natural dry state (see dry photo) Jarrah can look quite dull. However when oiled or lacquered it springs to life with the most amazing deep reds, lighter ‘veins’ running around the black burr eyes. Its absolutely incredible! The ‘eyes’ in Jarrah Burr are open but can be easily filled with black filler is looking for an untextured finished.
The history behind this burr is a bit of a mystery! Its very rare and unusual to have such a huge and heavy burr of this species land on UK soil. It would cost so much to transport something of this size and weight all the way from Australia. However, all I know about this amazing burr is that it landed in the UK back in the early 60’s and was kept by a collector ever since and a perfect storage environment. Ive never seen jarrah of this size or quality in all my years of working with wood and making guitars.
I’ve been so excited to finally start working on this burr, and the tops yielded are simply mind-blowing. The best of the best.
This set of Master Grade Jarrah Burr is 5.5mm thick. Please see the measurements along the edges of the photography board to see other dimensions. Set pictured both dry and sprayed with Naphtha to help show true grain and colour.
